I have always wanted a garden, but it has never worked out for us to have one. I tried one a few years ago, but I was VERY pregnant with another small child, it was VERY hot....and well, you can see where this is going.
We recently moved into another home that has a wonderful, welcoming backyard that we are SO thankful to the Lord for. My husband all of the sudden became very interested in gardening as he discovered the square foot garden boxes. I was very excited that he was on board because not only would I have help doing one but it would definitely be more fun to do it together!
Well, he has actually done it all!!! I occassionally water the garden, but that is about it! He built the boxes and ordered some good seeds and off he went! We started out with cold weather veggies such as: bok choy, lettuce, spinach, snow peas and radishes. We just recently harvested some radishes and will have lots more soon! It looks really great and it has been so fun to watch everything grow! The boys have really enjoyed watching the garden grow too! I often hear, "mommy, when can we eat the food we grow?"
We just planted tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, corn, cucumber and squash in our other garden box too!
Here are some of our pics to share and here is the site where we learned all we needed to know about how to make these: www.squarefootgarden.com.
Check it out and give it a shot! They are great because they are lower maintanence and you can start a garden with these even if you are just renting your home.

after about a month of planting the seeds (above)

last week (about 2 months from planting the seeds)
*these were planted in winter months-spring and summer vegetation often grows faster

oh, the bok choy is looking yummy!

this is the recent seeds we planted just a few weeks ago

That is a great link...thanks Jenny!
ReplyDeleteMmmm, I'm coming to your house for dinner every night this summer for some good homegrown vegetables.
